Love for St. Louis

by Sunny

Although I’ve never called this city home, there is something about being in St. Louis that feels close to home.  Is it the fact that my beloved Cardinals  are there?  The fact that it is also a Midwestern city? Maybe because it is in driving distance of my own hometown?  Enjoy this  photo essay showing the many reasons I love St. Louis.

New York City Tips

by April, JA, Wendy and Jack

Earlier this month, we spent part of Spring Break in New York City. Despite the rain and the chilly weather, we had Big fun in the Big Apple. Here are a few tips from each of us based on our recent trip.  Continue reading

How to Spend Quality Time in an Airport

I generally like airports. When I walk through the sliding glass doors, I feel energized by the sense of travel possibilities. Time can feel like it has stopped while you’re in this in-between space; you’re on your way but not there yet. Time is also your main focus – how long to get through security, is my flight delayed, can I order another drink before I have to trek to the gate? Airports can also be annoying, but I am determined to keep liking them. Especially after being inspired by Sunny and MJ, whose recent post proves that they really know how to keep their cool in an airport. Even when the wait is long, or the flight is cancelled, and it’s crowded, my sis and niece stay upbeat. My airport attitude is pretty good, but there’s always room for improvement. Here’s how I spend quality time in an airport: Continue reading

An Off-Season Adventure

by Sunny

In our constant attempt to save money and travel as much as possible, we often search for deals during a city’s off season to take advantage of low rates and small crowds.  Of course, sometimes what we expect to be a relaxing weekend trip shapes up to be a real adventure!  Read about our February  trip to Minneapolis, Minnesota and see why the massive Mall of America was one of the sanest parts of the trip!

Weekend R&R (Repairs and Recreation)

by Wendy
We had a great weekend recently, when Dad (Joe) traveled to DC to help us tackle labor-intensive home repairs. It was impressive to see what Jack and Dad accomplished in a matter of days. They’re both hard workers and work well together. Both have a calm presence that is reassuring to me (important when large chunks of your ceiling are suddenly missing). Not only did we save money going the do-it-yourself route, but it was fun! Home repairs can be stressful – but staying relaxed and leaving time for recreation makes all the difference. We had the opportunity to spend a couple of nights in Richmond, Virginia earlier in the month. Jack had a work event, and I was happy to escape the January doldrums and check out a delightful new city. Here’s a brief rundown of our Richmond weekend. Continue reading

2015 Weekend Trips

by Wendy

December is flying by. As the new year approaches I love to think back over the previous 12 months and remember the fun times. Over the course of 2015, I was lucky to have many weekends of travel. We took about 8 trips to see Jack’s family and 5 trips to see mine, plus had a ball hosting family visiting us in DC. We introduced my sister and nephew to one of our favorite local escapes from the city. We had wonderful trips to Spain, France, Utah, New York City and Hilton Head, which are captured in the blog. I love reading over these old posts – this was part of the reason for starting a blog in the first place. There were a few more weekend trips I wanted to call out for their specialness. Playing Hooky from Thanksgiving

by Wendy
A few years ago, Jack and I decided to do what we always talked about (and surely you have too) and go to the Caribbean for the long Thanksgiving weekend. We love our families, we love spending the holidays with them, we love the traditions, so this was a difficult choice (and one that can make you feel a little guilty). The previous months had been especially busy – work stress, a milestone birthday and resolved health issue – and it felt like the right time to take advantage of that extra day off after Thanksgiving and escape for a 4 day break. Packed and ready to go!

You know that as serial nonrevs our motto is that “getting there is half the fun.”  I would say that we also live for the anticipation of an upcoming trip.  As adults, anticipating a trip is like a kid waiting for Christmas – it sometimes seems like it takes forever and will never get here, but when it does, oh boy, was the waiting ever worth it! Here are some ways to get you – and your kids – hyped up for upcoming travel.

Moonbow Madness

Take a full moon on a clear night and a waterfall in Corbin, Kentucky and you will get a rare natural phenomenon known as a moonbow.  One of only two places in the world to view a moonbow on a monthly basis, Cumberland Falls is the most recent state park visited by the Looks and Leaps family.   Take into account that we were also going to be there on the night of a blue moon (the second full moon of a calendar month) and you have some serious moonbow madness going on!
