Looks and Leaps Fall Transition

By April, Sunny, and Wendy

How do you deal with the change of seasons when the weather still feels like summer?  Read on to see some of our ideas for Fall transition fashions!

Sunny – On Sunday, we visited the Homecoming festivities in my husband’s hometown.  MJ was so excited about the rides, Jimmy was excited about the warm, fall comfort foods, and I was excited about breaking out my new sweater and denim jacket.  MJ was overjoyed with the variety of carnival rides, but Jimmy and I were not so happy…the weather was sunny and 80 in mid-October.  Sweaters were not going to cut it, and we ate pumpkin ice cream instead of drinking hot cider. I did, however, pull together an acceptable fall outfit that worked for the festival, looked seasonally in place, and was comfortable with the temperatures.

The brown skirt and navy top definitely fit in with the fall colors, and the boots were a bit warm, but by wearing a sleeveless top and going without tights, I stayed pretty cool.

April – I’ve experienced my share of wardrobe glitches with the transition from summer to fall as I struggle to stay warm in the morning and cool in the afternoons.  There’s a weird couple of weeks where it feels too late for sandals and too early for boots.  The best I can do sometimes is try to find middle ground.  You know, take that summer dress and add a layer, like a scarf, cardigan, long sleeve shirt, or tights to create a different look and add some warmth without going full on winter.  I love cardigans and try to keep a variety of colors, cuts and sleeve lengths in the closet to create options for layers and to make the most of the standards in my wardrobe rotation. I recently found a few good ones at TJ Maxx.  I also have a devotion to tights so I stock up this time of year with a few fresh pair of basic black and grey opaque tights from Target – a solid, durable, pair for a good price!  They carry good patterns and colors too if you are bolder than me!

Wendy – I’m in one of those phases where most things in my closet make me want to puke feel uninspiring. I haven’t had much time to shop lately and also had some competing priorities for discretionary funds. I keep wearing the same things over and over. So my plan is to: 1) clean out my closet. Like so many fashion editors counsel, I need to weed out the stuff that doesn’t work well anymore and distracts me from items I love. Then I can look at my wardrobe with fresh eyes and buy new pieces to compliment. Ideally.  2) Go to the salon. Sometimes spending $ on my hair is a better value than buying new clothes. Highlights, a trim, or a blowout will make me feel confident even while wearing a dress from 5 years ago. Long live Drybar! 3) Jackets and scarves. Fall is the perfect time to wear the lightweight scarves that aren’t practical when it’s really hot in summer or really cold in winter. And I love cute, inexpensive jackets and am looking for a new ones – maybe to replace my army green jacket that has seen better days. Oh…the idea of parting with that jacket is already making me a little sentimental, which is why #1 is so hard. If I keep it, please don’t judge! April and Sunny, can you please come over and help me sort through this mess?
