Paris Views

The pursuit of beautiful city views is an essential part of any Paris itinerary. Here are a few locations for your consideration:

The Arc de Triomphe. This memorial to those who fought for France is majestic. After you exit the Metro onto the Champs-Elysees, take the underground tunnel to avoid street traffic and walk around the giant arch.

For 12 euros, you can tour the exhibits inside and climb over 200 steps to the top for a sweeping view. The sky stretches high above, and you may feel a breeze or raindrops as you gaze at Paris in every direction. Spot landmarks like the Eiffel Tower and Sacre Coeur Basilica among tree lined avenues.

The Eiffel Tower. I love this iconic structure. It is thrilling to glimpse – you know you’re in Paris. On my first evening in Paris years ago, April and I flopped on the lawn and just stared at the Eiffel Tower for awhile.

During my recent trip, I took the elevator to the second platform with Sunny and her family. We bought tickets in advance (recommended) for 11 euros, which allowed us to dodge some lines and save time. The elevator ride was short but cramped, and viewing platforms crowded with jostling tourists trying to get the perfect selfie. We ended up forgoing the cattle car and taking the steps down. The city scenery is lovely but of course, the Eiffel Tower will not be on the horizon from this vantage point.

Centre Pompidou. I decided to explore the modern art museum while Sunny and her family were at the Louvre. I absolutely loved it and can’t wait to go with Jack next time we are in Paris.

Not only is there a wonderful collection showcasing modern and postmodern artists – but the building itself is a work of art. Things look turned inside out in this unique exterior design. A price of 14 euros gets you access to the views and museum exhibits.

As you ride the delightful hamster-cage-like escalators to the top floors of the building, you can slowly watch the city unfold (see top photo of this post). Other floors of the Centre Pompidou offer open air views, and a lovely sculpture garden where the Paris sky is reflected in the fountain.

The view outside your hotel. Your room will likely be small, and you may not be spending much time there…but it’s your temporary home in Paris. You may not have a rooftop view of the city with the Eiffel Tower nearby…but there might be a quintessential street scene right outside, possibly bordered by romantic belle époque architecture.

Open the windows if you can, listen to the noise from local cafes, observe the families walking their dog or couples strolling, look at the way the light of the moon or rays of sun compliment the beauty of Paris. Pause to document or memorize this special view of your adopted arrondissement.
