Summer in the City

The classic beach vacation or the traditional theme park vacation are both staples for summer travel.  However, there are those of us who love to explore a new city during the summer months, too.  Along with the crowds, summer travel to the city also comes with suffering through the oppressive heat that hits the US hard in July and August.    Don’t let the sweltering temperatures stop you.  Travel smart in the heat and try some of these ideas the next time you jet to a city in the summer.

Slow down the Sightseeing – It’s easy to get caught up in the excitement and fully pack your to-do list.  Be gentle on your schedule when the temperatures soar.  The heat really zaps my energy levels wrecking havoc on my normal sightseeing stamina.  My solution? Plan a morning and evening activity and then take a midday break during the hottest part of the day for a relaxing lunch, a dip in the hotel pool, a spa treatment, or maybe even a siesta.

Use Taxis or Public Transportation – I love to sight see on foot where I can really take in the sights and make spontaneous detours if something catches my eye.  But hoofing it in the heat is not only impractical, it could be dangerous.  Many cities will issue “air quality alerts” during the hottest days of the summer, urging residents to stay indoors.  Use a taxi or public transportation to get around the city and save the walking for early mornings or a late night stroll.

Stay Hydrated – Again, this one is crucial to maintaining your stamina and health.  Carrying around a bottle of water is not always convenient or fashionable, but it’s important in the heat and humidity.  Also, consider this a golden opportunity to try every ice cream stand, smoothie shop, juice bar, and Starbucks shaken iced tea in the city.

Stay smart! Drink lots of water!!
