Lucky Duck

by Wendy
Jack and I had our share of rainy beach days last year. It happens. Luckily, our trip to Duck, Outer Banks, in early July was almost 100% sunny.

Outer Banks in North Carolina is one of the most beautiful beaches within a 6 hour drive for us. Hatteras Island is one of Jack’s favorites, where we’ve rented houses previously. During this visit, we opted to stay for 5 days in The Sanderling Hotel in Duck. Beach hotels can be a gamble – but we felt like we won the lottery. Continue reading

La Perla Spa in San Sebastian

by Wendy
Avoiding rainy beach getaways was not our strong suit this summer. We had our heart set on visiting San Sebastian/Donostia – one of the prettiest city beaches we have ever seen – but there’s rain in the forecast. A week or so before our trip I frantically start searching for ideas on what to do in San Sebastian when it rains. The more I read about La Perla Centro Talaso-Sport, the more I think Jack and I should visit this spa even if it doesn’t rain.

Of course it does rain, so we visit La Perla in the early afternoon hours of a Friday. Wow, this place is a treasure. Continue reading

Statistics from a Rainy Beach Weekend

by Wendy
Not all trips go the way you want. Some trips aren’t even that fun. Be appropriately suspicious of those who tell you otherwise, and of whatever they’re selling.

Everyone has a vacation or day off from work that isn’t up to par. You live through it and move on. You try to find something to enjoy, to joke about. I present to you: Statistics from a Rainy Beach Weekend. Continue reading

Every year, we vary our Spring Break destination and are rarely disappointed.  This year was no exception.  Originally planning to stay in San Diego, Hotwire had different plans for us.  When we spotted the mystery resort on the “island” of Coronado at a heck of a price, we decided to go for it.  Coronado was charming, relaxed, convenient, and beautiful – the perfect California getaway. We fell in love with Coronado, California during our 4 day trip in April. Here are our top 6 reasons to love Coronado

Sea Pines at HHI – The Perfect Beach Vacation

by Joe
My what a great week I just spent in Sea Pines on Hilton Head Island (HHI). If you’re not sure where Sea Pines is located just check out the coast of SC. It’s smack down in between Charleston and Savannah. A great southern state and typically referred to as the “lowlands” in this part of the USA! But that’s not why it was perfect.

The location is close to a huge part of the US population and in most cases can be an easy drive. From Louisville, KY it’s about a 10.5 hour drive which is about as quick as you can get to the ocean from our city. Florida (gulf side) is the same as well a few locations further north. But that’s not why it was perfect. Continue reading

Beach Weather Gamble: Part Two

by Wendy
Beach weather gamble Part One was much more dramatic than this story. Just a few weeks ago, Jack and I were looking forward to a weekend getaway in Dewey Beach, Delaware. Then weather reports start predicting rain Friday – Sunday. We almost cancel, but decide to go for it. Let’s see your cards, Dewey Beach! We can deal with a little rain. Continue reading

Beach Weather Gamble: Part One

by Wendy

How many times have you obsessively checked the weather leading up to a beach visit, only to be totally surprised by the weather that actually occurs.

Years ago, Jack and I went to one of our favorite islands, Puerto Rico, for a week’s stay. We arrive to warm tropical sun, settle in at a cool resort with several beautiful pools in front of a beautiful beach, and bask in the first day vacation glow with drinks at the outdoor tiki hut. Later that evening, the bartender we’re chatting with mentions that severe weather might be on the way. The next day’s skies are mild, but then a note from the hotel slides under the door informing us that Hurricane Irene’s path now indicates that it will hit the island and could we please move all balcony patio furniture inside? Diary of a Wimpy Hiker

I am not exactly what you would call an outdoor enthusiast, but I’ve improved a lot.

As a kid I played in the yard but generally preferred sitting on the couch reading. Growing up, I favored sports like volleyball in an air conditioned gym, kickball on a freshly mowed neighborhood lawn or tennis on a nice crisp court. In other words, activities where you didn’t get too dirty and could even wear cute skirts. I never really wanted to go camping, fishing, kayaking, rock-climbing or mountain biking. Continue reading
