The Lion King – A Review of the Broadway Musical

by Sunny and April

What a treat to be able to experience a Broadway show at any age, but particularly the phenomenally popular The Lion King as a 5 or 9 year old.  We thought it would be fun to interview MJ, age 5, and J, age 9, after the show.

This was your first Broadway show!  How was it?

MJ: Good!

J: Cool!

What was your favorite part?

MJ: When Simba grew up. At first I just thought [young] Simba had a lot of birthdays!  But it was actually a grown-up!

J: The hyenas’ song, “Chow Down” because it was very creative the way they used the scenery to the advantage of the song.

Who was your favorite character?

MJ:I like all of the characters!

J: A tie between Simba and Scar

What did you think of all of the animals walking up the aisle at the beginning?

MJ: It was pretty funny!

J: It felt real! I felt surprised and interested to see what would come next.

Were there any scary parts?

MJ: Yeah, for my first time I didn’t like the loud stuff

J: No

Any parts that made you laugh?

MJ: Yeah, when Pumbaa said, “The monkey’s your uncle?”  And I have another funny part.  When Zazu sang “Let It Go!”

J: When Pumba was describing the stars.

Who would you recommend the show to?

MJ: [my friend] Ava

J: (my friend) Noah

Would you see it again?

MJ: Yeah!

J: Yes, totally!

And because some of the best comments are when you aren’t interviewing, here are a couple of other thoughts about the show from the kids!

MJ: Why did Scar kill [Mufasa]?

April: Because he was jealous!  He wanted to be the king.

MJ: [Scar] should’ve just asked him!

Cindy: They have to perform one more show tonight before they go to another city.

MJ: Can we go see it again tonight?!
