Trying Something New

The old proverb may be, “You can’t teach an old dog new tricks,” but I think it’s time to change it to, “Teach the old dog ALL of the new tricks!”  Here are some of the new things that I will be trying for the first time this year!

Coding – Ok, this is a big one.  It is a super daunting challenge for me as I have NEVER been a Science/Technology minded person.  However, coding is the buzz word in education right now, and hearing about it has definitely caught my attention.  I think it has to do with the fact that it seems more creative than other types of Science.  Or maybe after so many years of teaching Language Arts, I need to learn something fresh.  Either way, I am currently completing an intro to Javascript bootcamp class from Flatiron School website.  And who knows?  Maybe I’ll enroll in their online program, too!

International Travel with a Kid – I haven’t been to Europe since college, so I am long overdue for a trip.  With husband and daughter, we are determined to cross the pond this summer for a European adventure.  The planning, the packing, the red eye, the language barrier…all challenges awaiting me in this new year.

Using a Fitbit – Being generally healthy, I’ve never had any interest in the rubbery bracelet that keeps track of steps, but our insurance now offers an incentive for using one so Jimmy talked me into the purchase.  I like it much more than I thought I would, mainly because it brings out my competitive/perfectionist side, and if I don’t get my stars for meeting my daily goal I feel a little bummed.  It has clearly showed me that despite being a healthy weight, I could stand to get a lot more steps and exercise than I currently do.

Painting – In the spirit of saving money for travel and trying new things, I plan to paint the interior of our home this year.  Jimmy and I are far from DIYers, but I feel like painting the walls is definitely something we can do without help.  While it is exciting that our home will be 11 years old this summer, the walls are showing age the most.  So during our room by room update, Jimmy and I will surely be up to our elbows in paint!

What will you try for the first time in 2017?
