Shakes on a Plane

by Wendy

I’m a pretty good traveler, but slightly prone to motion sickness on planes, trains and automobiles. I don’t take any medicine for it because I really don’t know when it will strike. On a plane, it’s usually due to turbulence. I’ve only puked on a plane once, and would like to keep it that way.

There were many bumps along the way when I flew from Baltimore to Las Vegas (en route to Reno) a few weeks ago, and I did.not.feel.great.

But I did not puke. Here are a few tips I use to prevent or combat motion sickness caused by Shakes on a Plane! Continue reading

Advice for Grads (don’t worry, not from me)

by Wendy
Graduation season is wrapping up, with the last of the crowds of students in caps and gowns with proud families blocking downtown sidewalks and slowing traffic. I wish them all well!

While I can understand the importance of marking the occasion, I thought my high school graduation was so boring, I skipped both the college and graduate school ceremonies. After I finished college, my Dad wrote a letter to me that I reread recently. I realize how lucky I am to have such constantly supportive parents, though I have taken it for granted at times. Both he and Mom taught my sisters and me the importance of hard work and education, a commitment to family and faith, and that being a good person matters so much more than being pretty.

I’d like to share some of Dad’s words of wisdom here – they still inspire me today and no commencement speech could ever have meant as much. I think both recent and not so recent grads can appreciate this – especially devoted travelers and aspiring writers. Continue reading

A quiet guide to Copenhagen

While I like travel stories about exotic locations and adventures, I also like stories that celebrate more accessible experiences and find joy in simple things. During trips near and far, I try to balance the sensory overload and thrill of the journey with taking time to pause and appreciate the setting. With that, I give you my quiet guide to Copenhagen, Denmark. Continue reading

Enjoy the Journey

Enjoy the Journey

by Sunny
Growing up, I looked forward to our yearly caravan to the Florida panhandle. A 10-12 hour drive was made a family affair during which siblings and cousins would take turns riding in various family members’ vehicles to stay comfortable, happy, and entertained during the annual event.

Now as an adult with a husband and 5-year-old, the 10-12 hour car rides have been replaced by shorter flights to a variety of destinations. We often fly stand-by (made possible by my husband’s job) so our wait time for flights varies. It is not unusual for us to get to the airport first thing in the morning and not depart until the afternoon…or even the next day. Sometimes our journey consists of crisscrossing the country in order to find empty seats to our final destination. So our family lives and breathes by the motto: getting there is half the fun! Here are a few ways that we enjoy the journey as much as the destination.
